BRIEF: Ethical guidelines in practice
based research through social media
revolution
We started the project by war driving or actually war riding (since it was with a
bike and not a car) and mapping out all the networks in gamla stan both open and
closed. To do this this we got a bike and 500 kronor to pimp it up. A computer and
a software called netstumblr was used to do this.
The aim was to define ethical guidelines within practice based research through
practice based research. Something that today does not exist at Konstfack.
After the war riding, we were stuck. We were a rather big group and there were
a lot of tension. we didn’t know what direction to take and there was no obvious
direction to take after the war driving.
Digital death interested us and also how freely we put up all our lives on these
social networks. We decided to proceed by being a bit unethical. We tried out a
couple of concepts. I was involved in the fake person; Canela Slatka on facebook.
We wanted to try out how many friends we could get and in that way also their
information. We were all Canelas and we feed her profile for about two weeks.
In that time she got like 130 friends who did not know who she was. We were a
bit surprised about how easily people just added her and gave us access to their
personal data, pictures etc. On the presentation we used this information. people
also got to vote by throughing or eating kanelbullar that were placed under the
seats.
The presentation was in form of a news show called PBR tv. The reason for this format was
that we had so many bits and pieces and this was a smart way to get them all to fit in. There were the war
riding, maps and documentation of that, the homeless project Martin did, Canela, digital death and the ethical
guidelines.
